I have an idea.

Well had a lesson with Paul today, basically went over things in more detail about the course and the two magazines we have to create, well we only create the front cover and contents page for one (college magazine) and for the other, the front page, the contents page and a double page spread (music magazine).

I think I have two ideas for the music magazine, the first is get a local band and do a questions and answer type double spread, with photos, focusing on there start and hopes for band. The second idea is that I do a gig review for gig I went to using pictures I took while at the gig. To get a further idea of this I'm going to buy some music magazines to compare and see how their articles look and the mode of address used. Time to ask Dad for money - educational need of course.

First Friday Lesson

Well in my first media lesson for friday we had Matthew and we discussed the portfolio and such, then we learned about the magazine conventions and looked at some magazines.
This is my attempt at the homework - I hope I have done it correctly (!)

In my first friday media lesson we learned the basic conventions of magazines, which makes the magazine appeal to its target audience and sell; if they dont the magazine fails to sell and a loss of profit for the company, therefore conventions are critical.
The conventions are as follows: Brand identity, camera shot, cover lines, date, cover price, issue number, barcode, mast head, key image, plugs, framing, font design, colour design, layout, mode of address, strapline and puff. Although some publications do not contain all the conventions.
Here is my example:
Audiences, I have learned are determined by the genre of the text, by using the conventions in a particular ways that are intended to appeal to the targeted audience.
For my first example I am going to use Empire magazine, it is a Film magazine, Which strapline boasts that it is 'The World's Biggest Movie Magazine'.

I believe that Empire has a demographic that is mainly based on the male poulation. At first glance I thought that this is targeted equally at men and women, it contains all types of films and DVD releases, not just the stereotypical male films.
But when I looked into it in further detail, it didn't seem as obvious at first but the plugs (advertisements) were what I  thought to be more of the male persuasion, they included : Xbox consoles and games, Jack Daniels Whiskey, James Bond villain watches, FHM subscription, the latest DVD releases and gadgets. I'm not much of a feminist but I'm all for a Xbox playing, whiskey drinking, FHM subscribing, James Bond villian and gadget enthusiast of a woman, but its stereotypically not the norm of what society thinks women should be.

My second example is Cosmopolitan Magazine, a well-known woman's magazine who's strapline is 'For Fun Fearless Females'. Its articles a full of fashion and style, beauty, sex, relationship and life advice. It often gives promotional codes and/or free gifts to draw in people to buy the magazine to hook people, so more people buy the magazine.
The demographic is women, undoubtedly the articles are aimed at women, and so are the plugs, which consist of designer perfumes, cosmetics, and clothing companies. Again I have nothing against a perfume wearing, make-up wearing, fashionista of a man but again it is not the likely stereotype.

So this is my attempt at magazine conventions and genres of text does this make sense to you or have I got this completely wrong. I welcome your comments, the good, the bad and the ugly.
